“Teacher Education in India: Trends, Challenges and Future Directions”

Introduction

The IQAC of NSS Training College, Ottapalam, organised a two-day research seminar on “Teacher Education in India: Trends, Challenges and Future Directions” on 13 and 14 August 2026. The seminar was organised as an academic platform for M.Ed. students, research scholars, teacher educators and alumni to engage critically with the emerging trends, contemporary challenges and future possibilities in Indian teacher education.

The seminar sought to provide opportunities for academic interaction, research presentation and scholarly discussion on various dimensions of teacher education in India. Particular emphasis was placed on the changing nature of teacher education, emerging pedagogical practices, research trends, policy developments and the challenges confronting teacher educators and institutions in the contemporary educational context.

The programme brought together distinguished academics and researchers as resource persons and provided a platform for 46 delegates to present their research papers. The scholarly presentations and discussions contributed significantly to the academic objectives of the seminar.

Inaugural Session

The two-day seminar commenced on 13 August 2026 with the inaugural session. Dr. Pradeep Kumar, Associate Professor, NSS College, Wadakkanchery, and Syndicate Member, University of Calicut, inaugurated the seminar. Dr. Sankaranarayanan Paleeri, IQAC coordinator welcomed the session.

The inaugural session was presided over by Dr. Suresh Kumar K., Principal-in-Charge, NSS Training College, Ottapalam. In his presidential address, he highlighted the importance of research and continuous professional development in strengthening teacher education. He emphasised the need for teacher education institutions to respond proactively to the changing educational landscape and to promote a culture of inquiry, reflection and innovation.

The inaugural session also included the felicitation of Dr. Lekshmi, Staff Secretary, and Sri Manoj Kumar K.G., acknowledging their contributions and services to the academic community.

Ms. Anitha, Research Scholar, proposed the vote of thanks and expressed gratitude to the chief guest, presiding officer, resource persons, faculty members, research scholars, student participants and all those who contributed to the successful organisation of the seminar.

Academic Sessions and Keynote Addresses

A major feature of the seminar was the organisation of four keynote academic sessions. Eminent scholars and teacher educators were invited as resource persons to lead the sessions and provide scholarly perspectives on contemporary issues in teacher education.

The resource persons were:

  1. Dr. K. S. Sajan
  2. Dr. Minikumari D.
  3. Dr. Mridula K.
  4. Dr. Sreevidya Nair N.

The keynote addresses examined important dimensions of teacher education and encouraged participants to critically reflect on current developments and future directions in the field. The presentations addressed the changing expectations of teacher education, emerging challenges in professional preparation, the need for innovative pedagogies, the role of research in improving educational practice, and the changing responsibilities of teacher educators in the context of contemporary educational reforms.

The sessions provided participants with opportunities to connect theoretical perspectives with practical experiences in teacher education. The resource persons also highlighted the importance of developing reflective, research-oriented and professionally competent teachers capable of responding to the complex demands of twenty-first-century education.

Dr. Ravishanker moderated the academic sessions. His moderation facilitated systematic interaction between the resource persons and participants and helped maintain the academic focus of the discussions.

Research Paper Presentations

One of the significant components of the seminar was the research paper presentation sessions. A total of 46 delegates presented research papers during the two-day programme.

The presentations covered diverse areas related to teacher education, educational research, pedagogy, curriculum, contemporary educational practices and emerging issues in the field. The research presentations provided participants with an opportunity to share their research findings, methodologies, conceptual perspectives and field experiences with fellow researchers and teacher educators.

The presentation sessions also encouraged scholarly dialogue among participants. Questions, observations and suggestions from the audience helped presenters examine their research from different perspectives and identify possibilities for further refinement and investigation.

The research presentation component therefore served not merely as a platform for dissemination of research findings but also as an important mechanism for peer learning, academic interaction and research networking.

Scholarly Interaction and Academic Outcomes

The seminar created an intellectually stimulating environment in which participants could engage with contemporary issues in teacher education. The keynote addresses and research presentations together enabled participants to examine teacher education from multiple perspectives.

Several important academic concerns emerged through the discussions, including the need to:

  • strengthen research-oriented practices in teacher education;
  • promote innovative and learner-centred pedagogies;
  • connect teacher education with emerging educational and technological developments;

Valedictory Session

The two-day academic programme concluded with a valedictory session on 14 August 2026. The session provided an opportunity to reflect on the major academic experiences and outcomes of the seminar.

Prof. Dr. Suresh Kumar K., Principal-in-Charge, delivered the valedictory address. In his address, he reflected on the significance of the discussions and research presentations held during the seminar and emphasised the continuing need for academic inquiry, research engagement and professional development in teacher education.

He also highlighted the responsibility of teacher education institutions to remain responsive to changing educational realities and to create opportunities for sustained research and professional dialogue among teacher educators, research scholars and student teachers.

The valedictory session marked the successful completion of two days of intensive academic engagement and provided a fitting conclusion to the seminar.

Overall Assessment

The two-day research seminar on “Teacher Education in India: Trends, Challenges and Future Directions” was a significant academic initiative of NSS Training College, Ottapalam. The seminar successfully brought together experienced academics, teacher educators, research scholars and delegates for meaningful scholarly interaction.

The participation of distinguished resource persons, the delivery of four keynote addresses and the presentation of 46 research papers contributed to the academic richness of the programme.
